Translation and migration from an intercultural point of view

The aim of this project is to stimulate a number of studies that analyse translations originating from a migration background, and this from a point of view that takes the confrontation between cultures as its starting point. The possibilities of this research project for developing master’s and PhD theses are numerous, given the many facets to the problem which, nevertheless, all circle around one central point: the confrontation of cultures. Translation is in itself a phenomenon of ‘migration’, in the sense that a text ‘migrates’ from one culture into another. Migration is a growing topic in Translation Studies and has many facets. The aim of this research project is to focus on themes related to migration, preferably related to Brazil, combining traditional research methods of translation studies with methods of the field of intercultural communication and anthropology. In this sense, the works of Edward T. Hall, Geert Hofstede and Clifford Geertz could be seen as having only remote bearings on Translation Studies. They provide, however, useful insights precisely in the transfusion of cultural meaning which translation always imply. It is my intention to show this in a research project concentrating mainly in exploiting the research possibilities of Brazil’s rich migration history.
